A Non-Competitive Annual Review of Unexceptional IPhone Pictures
Alternative state of mind- sharing before the new year.
If you are anything like me, you will likely subscribe to a famous phrase by my dad: las comparaciones son odiosas (“comparisons are odious”), which is particularly true this time of year when we all are bombarded with “best of” lists. A welcome counterpoint is Hyperallergic’s annual “The 20 Most Powerless People in the Art World” pointing at those who have faced great setbacks or ordeals (from laid off arts workers to Hong Kong and Cuban artist/activists to Polish LGBTQ artists).
This new year’s eve I will not add to that meritocratic ritual. Nor will I try to add more words: mainly because of this column, during the past two years I have written more than I have ever written in my whole life (close to 200,000 words, which is about the length, but definitely not the literary quality, of Moby Dick). For that reason, I will will only share a personal selection of images in my phone, collected throughout the year, without commentary. They are images that are meaningful to me for private reasons that are not important to be shared; I present them here mainly as a visual diary of the year. We all have one; I invite you to do yours as well. Pictures below were taken in New York, Baltimore, MD, Kinderhook, NY, Puebla, Mexico, Mexico City, Wassaic NY, Canaan, NY, Queens, NY, Cuenca, Spain, Galway, Ireland, Los Angeles, CA, Plainsboro, NJ, Gowanus, Brooklyn, and Arlington Heights, IL.
I wish you and yours a happy and productive 2023 and I hope to connect with you again, as always, next Thursday.
me encanta leer tus escritos! Hasta el Jueves entonces :)
