Late Summer Workshop: Pedagogical Curating
New course from the Studio for Education as Art, Aug 7-9
Dear all,
At different moments over the years, I have been asked “What is Pedagogical Curating?” — both by professional curators and educators. It is an aspect about curating — as well as art education— that is often overlooked and/or misunderstood, mainly because it does not fall neatly under either discipline. When I was designated Pedagogical Curator of the Mercosul Biennial in Portoalegre, Brazil, in 2010, I had not given too much thought that the work that I had been already doing for many years could be termed that way, but the fact is that, in many ways, especially for museum educators who work in adult and academic public programming, this term helps to define the professional activity in the interstice of both education and curating.
So for the second course of the Studio for Education as Art I am offering a late summer intensive on the subject of pedagogical curating. The class is geared toward those who work in museums (whether in education or curatorial), but also for independent artists, curators and/or educators interested in creating art projects (whether in the format of the exhibition or not) with the goal of engaging a diverse range of publics, from the immediate professional art community to the public at large.
This is an excellent professional development opportunity for emerging museum professionals who want to learn more about ways to engage publics, and also an opportunity for those curators and/or educators who already have some experience to reflect on their practice and consider new approaches.

I wish you a happy August!
Course 2:
Pedagogical Curating: Engaging Publics
Instructor: Pablo Helguera
This 3-session online course is for artists, curators, educators and anyone involved in creating art projects (from exhibitions to biennials, festivals and other formats) that seek to include an educational or public component, whether as independent projects or as projects within institutions.
The course offers an introduction to the educational dimension of curating, primarily through building a framework of reflection and debate within an artistic project, exhibition, biennial or public art initiative. We will examine the relationship between the education and curatorial practice, the ways in which the disciplines can exist in a productive dialogue, and how education and public programming can be creatively and productively employed in a cross-pollinating process with curating. Key areas of this class will include the engagement of various publics (arts professionals, general public, etc.), curating inside and outside museums, the legacy of the pedagogical turn in curating and various methods to research, develop, and implement successful exhibition programming.
The Studio for Education as Art is a socially engaged art project the form of a three-pronged organization. TSEA will offer classes, workshops, seminars on education as art for artists, curators and educators; develop exhibitions and public programs in collaboration with institutions or by commission and conduct research and development for arts organizations. TSEA will also promote artmaking, research, and critical thinking/ learning as part of an integrated process.
A number of optional readings will be assigned to further explore the topics discussed in this class.
