This week: The Public Program as an Alternative Space
Online class from the Studio for Education as Art
Dear all,
As many of you know, and if you have followed this Substack, my background in the museum world is in education, and, more specifically, public programming. It’s a somewhat rarified branch of museum education that often interweaves with curatorial practice. As a dear colleague of many years ago once said, we were “curators of voices”.
Throughout all those years I began appreciating the many ways in which the live event often walks a fine performative line between the interpretive/pedagogical objective and the artistic/conceptual gesture (and I have written in the past about that fine line). At that point also argued that the new alternativity had migrated from the brick-and-mortar spaces to the live event.

This week’s online class (three evenings, Tuesday-Thursday 6-8pm EST) explores that relationship. It is designed for artists, curators, and educators who want to learn a bit more about the public program as an art medium, and how we can use the tried-and-true tools of conversation, discussion and listening to attempt new experiential forms of art making.
Please pass this information along to someone you might think might be interested, and do join us if you would like to be part of this class!
All best
Pablo
